With summer holidays possibly still on the cards in Italy in 2020 there is good news for beach lovers, as the 2020 Blue Flags beaches in Italy have been announced. The number of municipalities that have obtained the award this year has increased from 183 last year, to 195. Let's have a look at 12 new entries and the Blue Flag criteria.

The nowadays well-known Blue Flags are awarded every year by the international charity FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education). In addition to clean water and respect for the environment, sea and lake resorts must meet a wide range of criteria and services to get the award. It is therefore good news that this year in Italy there have been 12 new entries and no outgoing beaches.

Let's have a look at the 12 new municipalities that have been awarded the 2020 Blue Flags:

  • Lido di Gozzano (Piedmont)
  • Diano Marina (Liguria)
  • Sestri Levante (Liguria)
  • Montignoso (Tuscany)
  • Porto Tolle (Veneto)
  • Vico Equense (Campania)
  • Isole Tremiti (Puglia)
  • Melendugno (Apulia)
  • Rocca Imperiale (Calabria)
  • Tropea (Calabria)
  • Siderno (Calabria)
  • Alì Terme (Sicily)

However, one thing must be kept in mind: not all the beaches in the municipalities are awarded Blue Flags. In fact, in the 195 municipalities that have been awarded Blue Flags, there are a total of 407 beaches.

If we look at it on a region by region basis, you can see that Liguria reaches 32 locations and is at the top of the ranking, followed by Tuscany with 20. Following is Campania with 19 locations, Marche and Puglia with 15, Sardinia and Calabria with 14 and Abruzzo with 10. Finally come Lazio and Veneto with 9 locations, Sicily with 8, Emilia Romagna with 7, Basilicata with 5, Friuli Venezia Giulia with 2 and Molise with 1. The number of Blue Flags on the lakes is also increasing, with 18 destinations awarded the well known eco-label.
