People live better in the north-east. This is according to the quality of life in Italy classification, drawn up every year by Il Sole 24 Ore, which crowns Trieste as the city with the best living conditions in Italy in 2021 and places various other cities in the area in the top ten. Let's discover the ranking together.
Quality of life 2021: the ranking
The "Quality of Life 2021" classification, compiled annually by Il Sole 24 Ore by cross-referencing some 90 parameters that measure how good people feel in their city, has seen Friuli-Venezia Giulia triumph, with four representatives in the top ten Italian cities for wellbeing.
In terms of wealth and consumption, environment, services, safety, work, culture and leisure, demographics and health, this is the region that stands out, undoubtedly also for its effective management of the pandemic. Trieste beats Milan to first place by a few tenths of a point, placing it at the top as a city of art and second for business and work; but in the top ten we also find Pordenone (seventh place) and Udine (ninth).
In general, the north-east is also represented with Trento, in third place, which retains its position, Bolzano, which falls three places but still remains fifth, Verona, in eighth place, and Treviso, which enters the top ten, leaping up 19 places.
In the remaining positions in the top ten we see Milan moving up ten places to take second place, specifically in terms of wealth and work; Bologna, which despite slipping remains sixth, and Aosta, which comes fourth, moving up four places.
The worst cities in Italy 2021
How about the worst cities in Italy in 2021? Crotone remains at the bottom of the list, as it was last year, preceded by Foggia and Trapani. The south generally occupies the lower part of the ranking, although Bari has climbed one position to 71st place. Rome also shows an improvement, but not enough to earn it a place in the top ten (except in terms of the quality of life of the elderly): it stops in 13th place, while Florence climbs to 11th.
