Italy is the land of the sun: its geographical position allows for many days of sunshine per year in both the South and the North. However, for meteorological reasons, some cities boast more hours of sunshine than others. According to the magazine Holidu, which has compiled a ranking of sunshine hours in the country's main urban centres, these are the sunniest cities in Italy.
Catania
With an impressive average of 274.9 hours of sunshine per month, Catania tops the list of Italy's sunniest cities. This pearl of eastern Sicily is rich in history and cultural beauty that can be discovered all year round.
Strolling through the historical centre, one can admire monuments such as the Cathedral of Sant'Agata, the Ancient Theatre and the Ursino Castle. Sunny days are also perfect for an excursion to Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano, from where you can enjoy spectacular views of the Ionian coast. And for those seeking relaxation, the golden beaches in the surroundings offer the ideal setting for sunbathing and taking a dip in the sea.

Syracuse
Still in Sicily, with 274.1 hours of sunshine per month on average, Syracuse proudly ranks as the second sunniest city in Italy. This ancient Sicilian city, known for its rich historical and cultural heritage, offers a wealth of opportunities and things to do.
If you are in the area, you cannot miss a visit to its famous Neapolis Archaeological Park, where the Greek Theatre and the Ear of Dionysius are priceless remains. Strolling around the island of Ortigia, the historical heart of the city, means immersing yourself in a unique atmosphere, among narrow alleys and sunny squares that open up to surprise, such as the famous Piazza del Duomo.

Cagliari
Moving on to another island, Cagliari, boasts 269.5 hours of average sunshine per month, making it rightfully among the sunniest cities in Italy. This port city is a city with a Mediterranean soul to be visited quietly and calmly. The historical quarter of the city, located high above the sea, is home to the Cathedral of Santa Maria and the Bastion of Saint Remy, from where there are panoramic views over the city and the sea.
Sunny days are also perfect for a walk in the Monte Urpinu Park or a relaxing day on the Poetto beach, where the sun shines almost all year round. From here, you can set out to discover the other treasures of Sardinia in the hinterland of Cagliari.

Andria
Andria, in the Adriatic hinterland of Apulia, boasts an average of 252 hours of sunshine per month, placing it fourth in the ranking. This not only makes it an ideal destination for those seeking the warmth of the sun, but also allows for year-round visits.
Among the must-see attractions is the UNESCO World Heritage Site Castel del Monte, known for its unique architecture and its eight towers built by Frederick II. In the centre, on the other hand, you will find the Cathedral built in the 12th century. Finally, in the city's restaurants, don't miss the typical dishes based on local products.

Pescara
In central Italy, Pescara is one of the most sun-kissed cities. With an average of 251.1 hours of sunshine per month, it often offers visitors clear skies. The long sandy beaches are the ideal place to take advantage of the fine weather.
But Pescara is not only sea; the city centre offers shopping streets, lively squares and museums that can also be visited on foot. If you spend a few more days here, then consider stretching along the Adriatic coast, where there are beautiful villages where you can relax and unwind.

Rome
In sixth place is the capital city, with an average of 249.9 hours of sunshine per month. Rome is always a good idea, but even more so when the sun is shining. Precious monuments such as the Colosseum, the Imperial Forum and St. Peter's Basilica can be appreciated both during the day and at sunset.
Strolling through the historic centre means passing famous squares such as Piazza Navona and Piazza di Spagna, where the sun's rays illuminate the fountains and facades of Baroque buildings. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a bit of shade in the summer, there are plenty of parks and green spaces such as Villa Borghese or Villa Torlonia, where you can relax and have an outdoor picnic.
