Venice is implementing a 5 euro entry fee for day-trippers on specific dates throughout 2024, starting from April 25th, a public holiday in Italy. This trial initiative aims to alleviate the strain of mass tourism on the iconic canal city. It will be enforced on 29 days, coinciding with Italian public holidays and weekends, spanning from April to July, and has already been causing controversy. There are also a considerable number of exemptions, not only for Venetians, but also for occasional workers or tourists staying in hotels and other categories listed in the regulation. Venice entrance fee 2024 dates

Paid entry to Venice will be active from Thursday 25th April 2024 and will be operational for 29 days until 14th July. In particular, tourists will have to pay to visit Venice on the following dates:

  • April 25th to April 30th 
  • May 1st to May 5th 
  • Every weekend (Saturday and Sunday) until July 14th (Republic Day, June 2nd, will be excluded).

The charge is applied only to the ancient city centre and not to the smaller islands including the Lido of Venice (including Alberoni and Malamocco), Pellestrina, Murano, Burano, Torcello, Sant'Erasmo, Mazzorbo, Mazzorbetto, Vignole, Sant'Andrea, the Certosa , San Servolo, San Clemente, Poveglia.

How much is the entry fee for Venice 2024?

The entry fee for Venice in 2024 is 5 euros for day visitors over the age of 14. This fee has been introduced in an effort to combat overtourism and help manage the crowds in the city.

How to buy the Venice entry fee?

Where to pay the Venice entry fee: To buy the Venice entry fee in 2024, a dedicated website has been available since 16th January, which allows you to book entry and pay the access fee of 5 euros in advance of arrival in the city. To prove that you have paid and are therefore entitled to access the historic centre of the city, a QR-code will be issued.

Furthermore, it will also be possible to buy the access ticket in any of the 30,000 PuntoLis tobacconists in Italy, thanks to an agreement between Vela spa (a company appointed by the Municipality of Venice for communication activities and sale of the access fee) and Servizi in Rete 2021 - company of the Italian Tobacconists Federation.

Venice entrance fee 2024: what are the exemptions?

Several categories are exempt from the fee, encompassing Venice's residents, children under 14, and disabled visitors along with their caregivers. Residents of the Veneto region surrounding the city are also exempt, but they need to request an exemption through the booking platform. Additionally, exemptions apply to various other groups, such as individuals visiting residents of Venice's historic centre, those visiting for work, academic, or medical purposes. Note that the contribution is intended especially for "hit and run" daily visitors who therefore do not stay overnight in the city and do not pay the tourist tax.

Specifically, exemption from paying the Venice fee is provided for the following categories:

  • Residents in the city of Venice, under 14 years of age, those born in the Municipality of Venice, who, in case of control, will have to show their identity document
  • Holders of a European Disability Card with their caregivers (showing the Disability Card)
  • Personnel belonging to the Armed Forces and the Police Force (showing the relevant service card)
  • Workers including commuters, students whose schools or universities are located in the Ancient City or in the smaller islands, individuals and members of the families of those who appear to have paid the IMU in the Municipality of Venice, residents in the Veneto region, those who enter in the city to undergo medical treatment, those who participate in sporting events, the spouse, the partner, relatives or similar up to the 3rd degree of residents in the areas in which the Access Contribution is valid. All these categories will have to request exemption on the website.
