Naples is a city where history and tradition can be felt in every corner. This is why almost every stone holds a story often steeped in religion, mysteries, and anecdotes. If you are visiting the city, don't miss these 7 interesting facts about Naples to see and learn about, to make your stay even more captivating.

Piazza Plebiscito and the Legend of Queen Margherita

Piazza Plebiscito is one of the most emblematic squares in the city of Naples, as it hosts both the Royal Palace and the Church of San Francesco di Paola with its dome. It is said that Queen Margherita offered prisoners the chance to earn their freedom if they could cross the square blindfolded, passing between two equestrian statues in the middle.

However, due to a curse or simply because of the square’s layout, no one ever managed to complete the challenge. The vast area and the uneven slope of the ground contribute to disorienting pedestrians. For this reason, it is still possible to see people attempting this feat and failing.

The Roman theatre hidden under a house

Imagine living in a house and discovering that beneath your feet lies an ancient Roman theatre. This is the reality for some residents in the historic centre of Naples, where the foundations of the buildings conceal an incredible sight: an ancient Roman theatre. The theatre, which dates back over two thousand years, is located near the Decumano Superiore.

The Roman theatre of Anticaglia was also one of Emperor Nero's favourite places, where he made his debut by reciting one of his odes. The cavea could accommodate as many as 5,000 people, highlighting the importance of this site in antiquity.

The twelve devils of Virgil

The Park of the Tomb of Virgil is not only a resting place for the renowned Latin poet but is also steeped in a history shrouded in mystery and magic. According to legend, it was here that Virgil found a bottle containing twelve devils. These creatures, eager for freedom, revealed to him the secrets of black magic in exchange for their release.

Today, the Vergilian Park is a green corner that offers visitors a respite from urban hustle and bustle, allowing them to immerse themselves in the tranquillity and beauty that only a place rich in history can offer.

One of the largest historic centres in Europe

The historic centre of Naples is recognised as one of the most extensive in Europe, a labyrinth of streets, alleys, and squares that stretches over more than 17 square kilometres. This vast area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, thanks to its incredible density of historical sites, churches, palaces, and monuments that tell the city's millennia-long history.

Among its streets, you can discover authentic architectural gems such as the Cathedral of San Gennaro, the Sansevero Chapel, and the Santa Chiara complex. But, in addition to artworks and monuments, there are also many opportunities for residence. In this area, you can find a large number of houses for sale and rent to settle in the city.

The Veiled Christ in the Sansevero Chapel

The Veiled Christ in the Sansevero Chapel represents one of the most astounding and symbolic works of Neapolitan Baroque art. This sculpture, crafted by the genius of Giuseppe Sanmartino in 1753, captivates the gazes and hearts of visitors with its incredible realism. The marble veil covering the body of Christ is so detailed and delicate that it gives the illusion of being real fabric, transparent and soft to the touch.

Legend has it that Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of San Severo, was an alchemist and that he had transformed a real veil into marble through a secret alchemical process. Although this story adds mystery and allure to the work, it is Sanmartino's artistic mastery that truly gives the Veiled Christ its magical appearance.

The Treasure of San Gennaro

The Treasure of San Gennaro is a collection of artworks and precious gifts that have been accumulated over the centuries as votive offerings to the patron saint of Naples. This incredible cultural heritage is housed in the Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro, attached to the Cathedral, and is considered one of the wealthiest treasures in the world, even richer than that of the English crown.

Among the most precious objects are jewels, statues, sacred artworks, and relics, including the famous Necklace of San Gennaro, a masterpiece of Baroque goldsmithing, or the beautiful Mitra. The treasure has always been kept in the Cathedral, except during the period of the Second World War, when it was evacuated to safety in the Vatican.

Castel dell'Ovo and the Legend of Virgil

Once again, the poet Virgil, renowned as a magician, returns in a well-known legend in Naples. It is said that he hid a magical egg in the foundations of the castle to ensure its stability. According to the myth, the breaking of this egg would have led not only to the collapse of Castel dell'Ovo but also to a series of catastrophes for the city of Naples.

Despite centuries passing, no one has ever found the egg, and the castle continues to dominate the beautiful seafront. This legend perfectly adheres to the reputation of magic that Castel dell’Ovo preserves, so much so that it is - according to many - the resting place of the mermaid Parthenope, the legend from which the name "Neapolitan" originates.
