What are the stages of the Sentiero Valtellina?

The Sentiero Valtellina can be completed in its entirety or in stages. However, if you want to start from kilometre zero, which is located in Colico, the stages to follow are as follows:

  • Colico-Morbegno: This stage measures 20 kilometres and has an elevation gain of 25 metres. Along the route, you will find rest areas and refreshments.
  • Morbegno-Sondrio: Totalling 26 kilometres with an elevation gain of 50 metres. From Bassa Valtellina, you will reach Sondrio, the provincial capital. You will pass through small villages and streams.
  • Sondrio-Tirano: The distance is 31 kilometres, with a more challenging elevation gain of 165 metres. Along this route, which will take you to the beautiful town of Tirano, you can enjoy exclusively cycle paths.
  • Tirano-Grosio: The shortest stage at only 12 kilometres, with an elevation gain of 170 metres, passing through the Mortirolo climb.
  • Grosio-Bormio: Approximately 25 kilometres to reach the final destination of the route. You will pass through the stunning landscapes of the Stelvio National Park.

What is the cycle path like?

The Sentiero Valtellina is suitable for cyclists of all levels, thanks to its predominantly flat and well-signposted route. The cycle path is exclusively for cyclists in some areas, while in others it is shared with pedestrians.

Along the route, you will encounter various types of road surfaces, from asphalt to compacted gravel, suitable for different types of bicycles, including racing bikes. Although the entire route requires several days, you can complete the Sentiero Valtellina in a single day by choosing just one stage.

The Sentiero Valtellina is not just a cycle path but a real journey through the history, culture, and nature of Valtellina. Along its 114 km, you will have the opportunity to admire a variety of landscapes and attractions that will make your experience unforgettable.

You can find ancient churches and sanctuaries, such as San Pietro in Vallate or the Santuario della Sassella. Continuing on, you will have the opportunity to see terraced vineyards and visit some of the local wineries, especially in the Chiuro area. Midway through, don't miss the rock engravings of Grosio, a testament to the Neolithic era, and the beautiful village of Sondalo. Of course, a visit to Bormio at the end is a must.

Colico, the traditional starting point, is easily accessible by various modes of transport:
