2020 is a year like no other and the coronavirus outbreak in Italy has transformed the way we live, resulting in a change in the way Italians think about their housing and living needs. A recent survey by the home improvement experts at Houzz has identified new trends that will emerge in many Italian households in 2020 after the end of the COVID-19 health emergency.

The new trends that have been emerging so far in the home in 2020, according to the Houzz survey, show that Italian residents are unsurprisingly desiring more outdoor space, but also a home office (31%), a bright house with more natural light (25%) or simply a larger house (5%).

After the emergency, a large percentage of the residents in Italy that were surveyed stated that from now on, they could never do without outside space (69%), and 9% would never give up the idea of living in a modern house, while 8% would like more privacy with a private room.

As for the new, home-specific interior design trends that are emerging in this post-Coronavirus 2020, let's have a look:

  • Multifunctionality: spaces capable of being transformed according to need and even also according to the time of day will become a popular option to help with changing living needs.
  • Open spaces: whether we're talking about cabinets, ceilings, basements, corridors or hallways, every small space must be exploited, in continuity with the surrouding space.
  • Say goodbye to hallways: another new home trend deals with getting rid of narrow corridors and unused hallways for the creation of more intelligent spaces, where you can take advantage of every square metre.
  • Home office: with the great working from home revolution, which in many cases is here to stay, having a space to work is now essential and home offices are more in demand than ever.
