The 1 euro houses project in Ollolai is entering a new phase, never before explored. In this small Sardinian municipality, the 1 euro houses project goes beyond offering homes for sale at a symbolic price: there are now also properties available for rent (both homes and commercial premises) at a symbolic rent. Let's find out more.
Ollolai is a small inland Sardinian village in the province of Nuoro which launched the €1 houses for sale project a few years ago. But now the current administration is entering phase 2.0, offering also €1 house rentals (and more, as initially 30 houses and 20 commercial premises will be available).
Both Italian and foreign citizens can participate in the 1-euro house rental initiative in Ollolai. The basic requirement is to certify one's willingness to transfer one's residence to the Municipality of Ollolai and, at the same time, to demonstrate that one has plans to make a life for themselves in the Sardinian village (this will be verified during the interview).
But how does the project work in detail? The 1-euro rent will remain so for 5 years, after which the rent will be subject to market rules (about 250 euros per month). The project was devised by the municipality in collaboration with the Comunità di Ollolai cooperative and the Aepi confederation (National Department for Rural and Mountain Areas).
In order to attract new citizens and combat depopulation, in addition to the 1-euro rents, other advantages are also being offered to those who participate, such as three-year baby bonuses, free textbooks, contributions towards school transport, and play and recreational workshop activities.
The aim, as Aepi's mountain area manager Efisio Arbau explained, is also "to help people discover the other side of Sardinia, that of the inland areas, of the scents, flavours, archaeology and immense heritage that we want to network".
