Italy is of course known for it's houses for sale at symbolic prices. However, the list of initiatives to save the villages in rural Italy is now going beyond 1 euro houses and there's a new idea on the block. The municipality of Pedemonte, in the province of Vicenza, has launched the 1 euro per day rent initiative to attract new citizens. Let's find out what it is all about.

Pedemonte is a town of about 700 inhabitants in the Val d'Astico, which in recent years has been suffering the phenomenon of gradual depopulation, common to many Italian villages. According to the local newspaper, this is why mayor Roberto Carotta has decided to make use of municipality funds to purchase a building to be redeveloped and made available for rent at advantageous rates, with the aim of attracting young families to the village.

A call for tenders will soon be uploaded on the website of the municipality of Pedemonte for families interested in settling in the flats, paying rent at a rate of just 1 euro per day. 500,000 euros have already been allocated to the scheme, to which another 150,000 euros will be added to combat the demographic decline in the area.

In detail, the municipality of Pedemonte is acquiring an abandoned building which, after renovation and redevelopment work, will provide 4-5 flats, the same ones that will be rented out at 1 euro per day. This is widely being described as a very advantageous offer, designed with a very specific purpose.

The aim is clearly to attract new young families to Pedemonte and keep the young people who already live in the village, giving priority to families with children, so as to be able to keep the schools open and support fundamental services to citizens. The possibility of purchasing additional housing to expand the scheme is already under consideration.
